AFA Mission

Action For Animals Humane Society (AFA) is a 501c3 non-profit, non-government funded, no-kill shelter that keeps animals free from the threat of unwarranted euthanasia. We provide care for abused, abandoned and stray dogs and cats of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. AFA is Westmoreland County’s oldest no-kill shelter. We have been matching people and pets for over 25 years!

AFA is governed by an all-volunteer Board of Directors and is one of the few shelters of our size in Western Pennsylvania that does not employ a paid Executive Director. This means that your donation dollars go toward more direct animal care and less administrative salaries.

The shelter houses up to 150 animals on any given day with no government funding. We adopt animals into responsible homes and vigorously promote the spay and neuter of all pets to eliminate the cruelty of animal overpopulation.

In addition to the rescue and adoption of almost 1,000 animals each year, we also provide a low cost spay/neuter program, humane agent and education programs, free board to animals of domestic violence victims, volunteer opportunities and are a first response disaster relief team member.

AFA is located just outside of Latrobe on Route 217. Please come see your donations at work and visit our animals in our beautiful facilities which include Tigre Pavilion (our cageless open-air cattery), Blessed’s Dog Park and walking paths, private visitation rooms, and outdoor covered play areas.
